What is Microdermabrasion?

microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive epidermal treatment that removes the dead and damaged surface layer of skin cells to reveal healthier new skin cells underneath. This stimulates the deeper dermal layer of skin to produce more collagen and elastin, giving the skin a younger, firmer, more supple appearance. Medical-quality microdermabrasion blasts or “abrades” skin with aluminum oxide crystals applied by a doctor or trained aesthetician. Only licensed professionals at a doctor’s office or skin care salon can use these $10,000 FDA-approved devices. Up to 12 treatments are usually required costing thousands of dollars!

Medical resurfacing treatments like dermabrasion, chemical peeling and laser resurfacing can be effective, too, but are expensive and have the potential for serious complications. In contrast, home microdermabrasion eliminates the need for costly equipment and high-priced medical professionals. It uses the same, sterile aluminum oxide crystals found in medical-grade machines, embedded in applicators you safely use yourself. Home microdermabrasion actually removes a layer of dead, damaged skin cells just like a professional treatment, for about 10% of the cost – and with comparable results.

Some so-called “home microdermabrasion products” use “exfoliating creams” and “skin polishing machines.” Real microdermabrasion needs friction to “abrade” the skin. Creams reduce friction, so they need to be applied with a skin polishing machine, and even then often give disappointing results. The process may feel nice and give your skin a superficial “glow,” but technically, if it isn’t abrading the skin it isn’t microdermabrasion. It can’t treat serious skin conditions, and doesn’t provide lasting results. In fact, these products must be used every day just for a superficial result, while medical-quality microdermabrasion is so effective that you only should do it once every two weeks!

Most people will see improvement after the first treatment, though the best results come after a series of treatments. Acne scars and large pores will be noticeably reduced. Age spots, discoloration, and fine lines will be less visible. Deeply pitted, scarred and dark pigmented areas may require more treatment. Microdermabrasion is not a “miracle cure” and results vary, but it has helped some serious skin conditions even more than expensive procedures like laser or chemical peels.

I have some deep pimples that have resurfaced several times and I never seem to be able to remove them completely. I also have red marks from old acne. Does microdermabrasion remove blackheads and whiteheads and pustules? What is the price? I am referring to the treatments they do in spas. Please no answers recommending other things like rubbing fruit on your face…

I have been looking into microdermabrasion. I have received price quotes of $35 at a salon to $65 at a specialty skin center. Why such a big difference? Is the treatment the same no matter where you go? I would rather pay $35 if I can get the same results. Thanks!

Benefits of Microdermabrasion

microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion, an anti-aging skin treatment, is gaining popularity for its ease of operation and the benefits that it offers. There are many benefits of microdermabrasion. Its procedure has the potential to meet a variety of your cosmetic objectives like the improvement of fine lines, wrinkles, hyper pigmentation, acne, scars and stretch marks.

The microdermabrasion procedure has shown a lot of promise for the treatment of acne scars. Most people have got good results for the microdermabrasion treatment of their acne scars. These positive results have immensely contributed towards the success of microdermabrasion as a skin resurfacing treatment for acne scars.

The best thing about microdermabrasion treatment is that it is a very mild procedure. It scores over both chemical peels and dermabrasion as ablative resurfacing technique by being less traumatic and less time consuming. With microdermabrasion treatment there is no downtime required for the recovery. There are other benefits of microdermabrasion as well. This treatment is a lunch time procedure which you can get done at any out patient’s clinic. The easy to operate procedure can easily be performed at an average skin-enhancement clinic. The procedure uses a closed-loop negative pressure microdermabrasion unit that passes aluminum oxide crystals for abrading the skin under the negative vacuum pressure.

Practical Microdermabrasion Information

The right kind of microdermabrasion information is important before going for this treatment. Microdermabrasion treatment can be used to treat a vast range of skin imperfections. It is especially effective for treating skin aging and photo damage. Microdermabrasion can be used on most skin types and most of the skin disorders like aging skin, wrinkles, acne scars, enlarged pores, rhytides, keratoses, blemished skin, thickened skin and brown spots and pigmentation.

For most skin disorders, a minimum of five treatments is recommended. On average, the frequency of microdermabrasion treatments can vary between 4 to 8 treatments performed with approximately 2 week intervals between each successive procedure. The time interval is necessary for recovering the skin barrier function that is damaged after an aluminum oxide crystal microdermabrasion procedure is performed. Generally, it takes a time period of 1 to 4 days to recover the function and bring about an improvement in the skin tone. Repeating the superficial peeling procedure at 2-week intervals will allow sufficient time for the damaged skin to recover its barrier function. Most patients actually feel and see a difference after just one or two treatments, but scheduling additional treatments helps to increase and maintain the improvement. The skin improvement after microdermabrasion treatment is brought about by stimulation of fibroblast proliferation and collagen production. The new collagen deposition makes the skin smoother and reduces the visibility of skin blemishes.

Microdermabrasion treatment of acne scars requires more intense and aggressive treatment with more passes and more rounds of microdermabrasion treatment to get the best results.

Similarly raised or deeply pitted skin areas (possibly from old severe acne scars) and darker pigmented areas require multiple treatments.

Limitations of Microdermabrasion Procedure

Microdermabrasion is a mild procedure and it cannot be advised for those who have heavily damaged skin for which a more aggressive approach like a laser or a deep chemical peel needs to be tried.

Microdermabrasion is not able to remove tattoos, neither it is able to remove acne scars which are very deep down the skin. Similarly undiagnosed lesions, recent herpes outbreaks, warts, active, weeping acne (stages 3 to 4) and active rosacea are the skin disorders that cannot be treated with microdermabrasion.

Lastly microdermabrasion procedure is not suitable for patients who have had any type of ****** rejuvenation procedure or treatment such as Botox injections, collagen implants, or chemical peels within the past 3-6 months.

Back Acne and Microdermabrasion

microdermabrasion
Back acne is found in teenagers and adults alike and like its description, occurs on the back. The major difference between back acne and those that appear on the face, chest or neck, is that they are much more severe, they cause more pain and are harder to treat.

Some people claim that back acne can be genetically carried down family lines, this is true, but only to a certain degree. To be completely frank, it is mainly due to an imbalance in the hormones in your body, as well as the environment in which your skin is exposed to. So for example, if you sweat a lot (hyper-hydrosis), or if you wear tight fitting clothes, there is a greater chance that you will get back acne. Therefore, if you generally do a lot of sports, then you are more likely to be victim of it. All of this sweat and dirt mixes with the oil that is secreted by your sebaceous glands (sweat glands), and this clogs up the pores on your skin on your back, and this results in back acne.

It is smart, and common sense to therefore make sure you are always clean and take showers regularly, especially after physical activity that has made you sweat. Unfortunately, in some people back acne can be very severe and infected. If this is the case, your doctor will prescribe an antibiotic such as tetracycline. Retin A cream or ten-percent benzoyl peroxide solution will also help in back acne that is difficult to treat. In really severe cases, a drug called Ro-accutane can be used. You should be especially careful when using this drug, because in high doses over long periods of time, it can detrimentally affect your liver function.

Many people question what surgical techniques are beneficial for back acne. Laser treatment is quite popular, however it can be quite expensive nowadays. Microdermabrasion is another option that is also very popular. The use of microdermabrasion in clinics, and even the use of microdermabrasion home systems have helped back acne suffers immensely. Consider both of these techniques if you have chronic recurrent back acne.

Like already said, if the acne is milder, make sure you control personal hygiene. Instead of using normal soap, which can be irritant to the skin, try using baby shampoo, or a salicylic acid-based cleaner and use it to wash your body, especially after physical exercise. These solutions will kill the bacteria that are clogged up in the pores on the skin on your back, and so prevent eventual acne formation. After the shower, make sure you completely moisturize your back with an alpha hydroxyl base moisturizer.

If it is difficult to get your hands to reach your back, try asking your partner or family member to help you to apply it after your shower, as many times as possible. The cream will bring about exfoliation of the skin, and prevents dry skin, so it will also improve its overall longevity.

Final preventative measures include wearing cotton clothes, and applying baby powder to your back to keep the skin dry when you are outside in the sun for example. Deodorants are not recommended, but anti-perspirants are effective while you are doing mild physical exercise. But do not use it when undergoing heavy exercise, because the cooling effect of the sweat is very important during exercise, and it prevents you from getting a heat-stroke, especially in the sun.

In conclusion, keep clean, keep clean and wash yourself regularly!

I’ve told the ladies who do the ******* what my concerns are about the gunk in my pores but they never have told me about microdermabrasion. I currently have an appointment to have this done but I don’t want to go in with high hopes if its not going to be what Im expecting. So basically I want my pores to not have that dark look in them.

Microdermabrasion at a Doctor’s Office, Exfoliating Machines, and Home Microdermabrasion Compared

microdermabrasion
Until now, professional-quality microdermabrasion treatments cost up to $200.00 each. Over the counter products now let you do it yourself at home and save! Crystal-bonded applicators use the same aluminum oxide crystals as expensive medical-grade machines stimulate the production of elastin and collagen, just like a professional treatment – for comparable results at an affordable price!

HOW IT WORKS

Microdermabrasion at a doctor’s office or spa: Aluminum oxide crystals, the hardest and best for microdermabrasion, are applied under high pressure with a medical-grade device by trained doctors and aestheticians.

Exfoliating Machines and Creams: Cream-based formulae are often applied with a “free” motorized device to appear more effective. But cream reduces abrasion, so stimulation of collagen and elastin is negligible.

Home Microdermabrasion: Medical-grade aluminum oxide crystals applied directly to the skin stimulate production of elastin and collagen just like a professional treatment.

EFFECTIVENESS

Microdermabrasion at a doctor’s office or spa: Most effective removal of dead, damaged skin cells. Stimulates production of elastin and collagen to reduce wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, etc., but too costly to do regularly.

Exfoliating Machines and Creams: Exfoliation of superficial dead skin cells may produce a temporary glowing effect with daily use. Minimal stimulation of skin or impact on wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars or other blemishes.

Home Microdermabrasion: Removes dead and damaged skin cells, which strengthens and thickens skin just like professional treatments, reducing acne scars, wrinkles, fine lines and blemishes.

EASE OF USE

Microdermabrasion at a doctor’s office or spa: Requires regular appointments and travel to a doctor’s office or spa. Skin needs time to heal after treatment, so should only be done periodically.

Exfoliating Machines and Creams: Must be used almost every day for as much as 10-15 minutes. Minimal affect on skin after treatment.

Home Microdermabrasion: Do it yourself right at home. Skin needs a brief time to heal afterwards, just like a doctor’s treatment. Use every two weeks, NOT every day.

COST

Microdermabrasion at a doctor’s office or spa: Up to $200 per treatment

Exfoliating Machines and Creams: $39.95 – $129.95

Home Microdermabrasion: $79.95 6 Applications

COST FOR 90 DAYS

Microdermabrasion at a doctor’s office or spa: Up to $1,200 or more. Regular treatments cost thousands!

Exfoliating Machines and Creams: $100 – $300.00; $3 to $5 a day

Home Microdermabrasion: $79.95; Less than $1 a day

* Microdermabrasion requires appropriate skin care afterwards to help heal and protect your new skin, including the custom-designed moisturizers, hydrating lotions and sun screens.
